You
might imagine a scientist, a green business person, or an
activist to be the face behind on blog on environmental issues.
But an English professor? That was Jeff McIntire-Strasburg's
"real job" when he started sustainablog in July, 2003. It was a
learning experiment, and learn he did! Since sustainablog's
beginnings as a completely independent effort born out of passion
for creating a greener world, sustainablog has grown into one of
the most recognized blogs on the web for information and analysis
of all things green: business, activism, science and technology,
politics, culture, and lifestyle.
After six years as a content hub, sustainablog has now expanded its offerings: in addition to the wide range of content for which the blog is known, you can now also shop for green products. We've partnered with SEO consultants JB Web Analytics to offer you a wide variety of goods, as well as the information you need to make informed choices. In many cases, you'll even be able to compare prices, and find the best deals on products that help you lighten your environmental footprint.
While
sustainablog is a for-profit venture, it's run by people who know
we can't continue to do "business as usual": we all have to take
responsibility for our impact on the planet, and make choices
that both enhance our lives while preserving natural resources
and services for future generations. We sell green products; we
don't think that's nearly enough, though. So, even as we present
a variety of goods for sale, we'll always let you know the
greenest choices available (even if those choices involve not
buying a product). We'll work to ensure that everything you find
in our store is really "green," rather than "greenwashed." And
we'll donate a portion of our profits to theDancing Rabbit
EcoVillage in Northeastern Missouri, because we know that the
radically sustainable lifestyle this small group of people lives
needs to be emulated.
We partnered with JB Web Analytics because of these values. Located at Dancing Rabbit, JB Web Analytics is based in a straw bale building run completely on renewable energy. They're nearly paperless, and use public transportation for business meetings. Shopwiki's product search platform gave us the ultimate flexibility in being able to choose products and categories that meet your needs... if something shows up there that doesn't meet high green standards, we can take it out of the equation. Both of these companies seemed ideal for supporting our mission of "blogging a greener world."
Whether you're looking for shopping options, information, or a community of people committed to a greener world, we've got it here at sustainablog. We hope you'll visit often, and let us know if you ever have questions or concerns by emailing sustainablog [at] gmail [dot] com.
Looking for the perfect green gift for a family member? Need non-toxic or recycled household supplies? Or looking for the perfect energy-saving appliances for your kitchen remodel? You'll find all of these items and more at sustainablog's green products comparison engine. You'll even be able to compare prices on many of the products we feature. And if you're new to the whole "green" thing, don't worry: we've created a number of resources to help you make informed choices about the environmental benefits of almost any product.
